Summary/Abstract: The establishment of the first permanent diplomatic mission of a Great Power on Romanian soil, the General Consulate of Russia in Walachia and Moldova, located in Bucharest, one of the highlights towards the end of the ‘Age of Lights’, sets the clear and determined stepping in of the two Danubian Principalities in the international economic, political and diplomatic circuit. In the last two decades of the 18th century, more accurately between December 1st 1779 and February 1st 1800, the Great Powers, Russia (1779), Austria (1783), Prussia (1785), France (1796) and Great Britain (1800) established permanent diplomatic missions in the two Principalities by the Danube, Walachia and Moldova, the general consulates, with offices in Bucharest and Iaşi. The establishment of foreign consulates signified an undeniable international recognition of the autonomy of the Romanian Principalities.
