Summary/Abstract: Profits from the production and sale of alcoholic drinks were a major item in the revenues of the city of Szadek in the 19th century. Income from this type of activity belonged to the citizens of Szadek, who allocated it for city expenditure. In 1862, 68 Szadek citizens – the proprietors – granted to their representatives full power sin the scope of managing the revenues from the production and sale of alcohol. Five plenipotentiaries (proxies) and one deputy were chosen, their competencies being defined in the letters of proxy. Signatures under this document show that 73% of the proprietors choosing the plenipotentiaries were literate.
