Summary/Abstract: The tesis of the article is that ancient maetaphor of history „magistra vitae” recently has disappeared. We can see it in Polish modernly essey. Even if the phrase appears there, it’s form of irony, controversy or it changes first senses. Sometimes we can meet another phrases, near to „magistra vitae”: „lesson of history”, „wisdom of history”, „history teaches”, but of ten with distance and irony too. They are some reasons: human experience of cruel history (especially II world war), modern models of history, especially idea of progress and linear model of time, new philospohical conseptions and idea that history is the ballast (F. Nietzsche).
