Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to present the shaping of the accountability of President in the Fifth French Republic; indicate the corrective influence of political factors on the constitutional sphere and to evaluate some legal regulations and their realization. The article distinguishes the accountability of President to the nation, exercised during poll, in direct (presidential elections, referendum) or indirect way (parliamentary elections), or even some kind of the accountability for political decisions. It propounds a thesis that despite the explicit constitutional articulation of the political non-accountability of President this kind of the accountability is executed in different forms, usually to the nation and it has actual but over constitutional and informal character. The author claims that the execution of different forms of political accountability is determined first of all by subjective evaluation of situation made by Presidents and by their political attitude. The paper also discusses the problem of penal accountability of President in the Fifth French Republic and gives some critical comments to the 2007 regulations. In conclusion it states that the forms of accountability of President are faulty and this accountability still remains inadequate to the scope of the presidential powers.
