Summary/Abstract: The article studies the song of King David, Psalm 18 (17 in the Slavonic tradition), which is incorporated in the two Books of Kings as chapter 22 in the Second Book of Kings. The major question discussed is the approach adopted by the Old Bulgarian translator of the Books of Kings in relation to chapter 22 of the Second Book. The comparison between its Slavonic text (traced in 8 Slavonic manuscripts from the 14th–16th c.) and the Slavonic text of Psalm 17 (according to twelve Psalters under various versions between 11th–16th c.) reveals that the translator of the Books of Kings has used an earlier Slavonic translation of Psalm 17, borrowed from an archaic Psalter (of the type of the Glagolitic Psalterium Sinaiticum), uninfluenced by later redactions (the Preslav version from the 10th c. and the Athonite version of 14th c.). Therefore the incorporation of Psalm 17 in the content of the Second Book of Kings and perhaps the whole translation of the Books of Kings, should be dated in the beginning of Old Bulgarian literature.
