The Old Testament’s Figura Etymologica in the New Bulgarian Translation of the Bible

Summary/Abstract: The biblical text is rich with specific stylistic figures that have to be correctly understood and taught in the interpretative process. One of them is the figura etymologica, a phrase in which the words have common root and depending on their place in the sentence, might have different meaning. How is it applied in the new Bulgarian translation of the Bible? This stylistic figure matters not only for the meaning, but for the composition of the text including its construction, its culmination, beginning, end and its genre. Furthermore, behind the figura etymologica are often hidden emotions, dynamics, desires and aspirations. The correct understanding of this figure removes the feeling of repetition and tension in the text and gives another, different perception of the biblical storytelling and the poetic fl air of the biblical writers.
