Summary/Abstract: The author contends that in spite of the development of a huge scientific literature within International Relations and Security Studies, dealing with “State/Nation building”, there is no sure receipt for rebuilding failed states like Somalia, Congo or Afghanistan, because the complexity of the concrete situations overwhelms any kind of theory, be it even a complex one. More than that, the existence of rich natural resources like gold, diamonds, oil in the weak and failed states increases the likelihood of violence, as the local leaders prefer to rely on the exploitation of these goods and not on the democratic will of the population. The international community and especially the Western states have a political, moral and legal duty to take part in the reconstruction of these states because their existence as “weak/failed” entities is a great source of instability.
