Source Selection for Empirical Research in the Field of International Relations

Summary/Abstract: The question of choosing the method of source selection for empirical research in the field of international relations results, on the one hand, from the methodological practice adopted in historical research, and on the other hand, from the limitations and the possibilities of conducting research in the field of political studies. The aim of this article is to present the methodological potential resulting from the juxtaposition of the positive, the negative, and the balancing selection of sources through the example of the research on the effectiveness of the state’s foreign policy. Balancing selection of sources made it possible to choose such available materials which would optimize the research process while maintaining the balance between the narrative and the reality.
