Summary/Abstract: The present study aims to give a brief overview on the history and present state of research of the archaeological investigations carried out by various scholars and research groups on the shifting territories of the former Byzantine Empire. Despite the long history of archaeological excavations conducted – mostly by prehistorians and classical archaeologists – on a huge range of sites with vast Byzantine layers, ‘Byzantine archaeology’ is neither a well-defined field of study nor a deeply integrated discipline into Byzantine studies. Therefore, as a first step, both chronological and geographical aspects of the term ‘Byzantine’ as well as the position of archaeology were to be defined. In the second part of the present brief survey the general outline of the previous research is sketched with special attention to the new trends and methodologies introduced from the 1970s onwards. In the frame of this overview, the author intends to focus on the role played by the archaeological research in widening our perspective and deepening our understanding of various aspects of Byzantine everyday life.
