Three Decades against Security Service: Unknown Dimension of Adam Podgórecki’s Biography

Summary/Abstract: The article shows parts of Adam Podgórecki’s biography from the perspective of the Security Service (SB), an organization infiltrating the Polish sociologist for nearly three decades (from early fifties to late seventies). The author stresses the role that the SB took in Podgórecki’s life by demonstrating its methods, structures and types of control. Typical “carrots and sticks” present in the scientific milieus are also included. More detailed picture is provided in relation to some repressive actions that touched the Institute of Social Prevention and Resocialisation in years 1974–1976 as the SB together with university authorities and communist party cell reshaped the IPSiR. Thereupon Podgórecki and some his associates received an offer they couldn’t refuse, leaving IPSiR and ceasing some innovative research concerning social pathology. Soon afterwards Podgórecki left Poland forever. The archival data from the Institute of National Remembrance represents the empirical basis of the article.
