Summary/Abstract: One of typical features of modern liberal democracies is philosophical, ethical and religious pluralism. This wide range of various doctrines and values is on one side very positive fact, on the other side it can cause problems and serious conflicts as well. This article deals with the proposals of American philosopher John Rawls concerning the questions of democratic pluralism, namely with his concept of public reason. It focuses in particular on the relations between public reason and religion, especially on the questions about the meaning and role of religious arguments in political discussion and decision making in the way they are reflected in contemporary philosophical debate.
