Summary/Abstract: Undeniably, the American behaviour in terms of foreign policy is an essential element for the study of international relations. Thus Neoconservatism, since it currently exerts a considerable influence of the US policies, is highly relevant in this respect. This study focuses on two rather stringent problems of the 1980’s: the crisis of NATO – and its potential roots, such as American military overextension, or the psychological effect of Europe’s dependence on the United States – and the net assessment of European balance – topic of very intense debates in the 1980’s. Both issues are approached as they appear in a number of articles written by Eliot Cohen – a leading member of several important neoconservative institutions and think tanks, who publishes frequently in journals, magazines, reviews and newspapers known as displaying distinctly neoconservative points of view, thus being highly relevant with respect to the neocon perspective on the issues in question.
