Aspects Regarding the Structure and Geographical Distribution of EU Military Power

Summary/Abstract: The study starts by fully recognizing the significant economic success of the European integration process. But such positive results, even if they are very important, cannot replace what the EU badly lacks in terms of military power. The author clearly states – and proves, using a lot of figures – that the European Union cannot behave as a complete and fully operational great power on the world arena, because it lacks both an adequate number of airplane carriers and adequate amounts of sealift and airlift capabilities, and an adequate amount of Marines, integrated in an unit resembling the might of USMC. Even more dangerous than all these, the way in which military manpower, combat airplanes, main battle tanks and artillery pieces are deployed proves that, at this very moment, the European Union does not have real continental and coherent military policy, but only a large collection of national defense policies, not at all able to generate, in case of need, enough security for the immense territory and for the continental and global interest of the Union.
