Summary/Abstract: This study attempts to outline the relations which, in spite of the demographic catastrophes, were able to ensure the numerical increase of the Hungarian population. Encompassing more than a millennium, it presents the two major eras of the demographic processes in the Carpathian Basin, along with the break that was brought about by the peace treaty which ended the First World War, and abolished the Hungarian Kingdom. The author identifies the main determination of the post 1918 demographic development within the migration of the recently constituted national minority to Hungary, a process which brought about a decrease in the number of ethnic Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin and the ageing of the population
