Summary/Abstract: The principles which have traditionally informed sustainability policies and the social, political and environmental discourse are today somewhat unclear, due to the lack of consensus on the significance of sustainability. This article will discuss these issues and also analyze other dimensions related to the institutional response to the challenge of sustainability, relating the latter concept to social participation as a relevant dimension in people’s involvement with the environment. Two aspects will be analyzed. On the one hand, social mobilization intention in the face of environmental crises will be discussed. On the other hand, we will discuss those behaviors that the citizens feel motivated to modify, as well as the barriers and limitations they encounter in the process. Data from the Study on Sustainability and Environmental Culture in Galicia (Northwest Spain), conducted during 2006 and 2007, will be analyzed.
