Summary/Abstract: Nowadays there is a number of theoretical approaches to the studies of vertical differentiation; one of them is the approach or Pierre Bourdieu. A less usual method was chosen jor its presentation. ln the first part, we proceed from the Czech interpretations of the Bourdieu's theory of class, known to the Czech reader, to Bourdieu's theory itself. Thus we are introduced to Bourdieu's theory interpreted within the official Marxist sociology of the 1970s and 1980s and then with its interpretation after 1990. The second part focuses on the core of Bourdieu's theory of vertical differentiation (social topography), at the level of nominal "classes on paper" as well as at the one of real classes as mobilized social groups. Bourdieu's approach can help better understanding of the social structure of a society. The reason is that Bourdieu's social actors are not represented as Marx's fighters but as strategists.
