Summary/Abstract: Pharmaceutical industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the global economy. In addition, it is a capital intensive industry because it depends on the results of long-term and expensive R&D projects. Croatia has a century long tradition in drug production, and accordingly it can stand alongside any developed country in the world. Thus, Croatia does not lack highly educated personnel or research and manufacturing facilities. Nevertheless, pharmaceutical companies in Croatia cannot compete with big multinational corporations, neither in size, nor by product line, sale or profit. The Croatian pharmaceutical companies are mainly nationally orientated and export to neighbouring markets. There are 16 pharmaceutical companies registered in Croatia. Six of them are big, while the rest are small and medium size companies. The aim of this paper is to analyse the importance of the technology, knowledge and know-how needed for survival in the extremely competitive pharmaceutical market, as well as to give an overview of the small and medium size pharmaceutical companies in Croatia.
