Summary/Abstract: In traditional terms households’ living standard is influenced by their income level, and the closely interrelated consumption. In Hungary the households’ income and consumption situations show diverse face at regional level. In recent years examination of living standard based on subjective factors came into the foreground. Because individuals and households take not only income into consideration, when judging their position, but several other factors that affect their temporary situation and future plans. In my research I focused on the opinion of households about financing their own habitual expenditures. At regional level this opinion of households was significantly influenced by the possibility to have holidays and capability of paying overhead costs. Income and consumption indicators in traditional terms appeared only rarely as explanatory factors. I think that spotlighting the subjective factors may make more accurate our formed point of view about the living standard, however it is necessary to keep an eye on the suitable proportion of the objective and subjective factors, since the individual is likely to project his feelings and ideas onto the questions being based on his own judgement.
