Summary/Abstract: The poverty threshold may be defined in several ways. The Eurostat definition of a relative poverty uses the national median income level to determine the poverty line. However, the poverty rates obtained this way strongly correlate with income inequality metrics, in addition, they tend to fall far from the results obtained with the socalled deprivation index. The study aims to complement the almost exclusively applied relative poverty calculation with an alternative method, in order to provide a more accurate and comparable view on European poverty. The new methodology is based on a European Union poverty threshold, which is complemented by a deprivation criterion. The source of data is the 2010 wave of EU -SILC micro data, which have been provided by Eurostat.
