“The Star of Kutlesh is a Symbol of the Macedonian Nation… the Bulgarians Have the Horse Tail as Their Symbol”. On the Production of Ethnic Difference

Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on investigation in a constructivist plan of the process of establishment of ethnic boundaries defining “us” (the Macedonians) in opposition to “them” (the Bulgarians). The author analyses the monthly newspaper “Narodna volya” published in 1990s and addressing Bulgarian citizens “who feel themselves Macedonians”. He interprets origin, past, culture and language as resources for the construction of “common traits” and the practices of their establishment as boundary markers based on the application of cultural techniques (such as for example invention, reconstruction, polar evaluation, etc.). The very production of ethnic differences in the newspaper under analysis is here advocated to be based on sharpened dichotomies: rich—poor, refined—primitive, civilised—simple. The author of the article conceptualises the production of ethnic differences as part of identity managing achieved by the newspaper.
