Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the significance of the development of teachers as individuals, with the importance of lifelong education of adults, and the necessity of personal selfeducation of teachers - their individual professional development. In that respect, European standards and tendencies are presented, accompanied by the national strategy of adult education. Notwithstanding a significant number of papers focusing on different aspects of teacher training, insufficient scientific and research attention has been devoted to teachers' individual professional development. Aiming to bring this problem to attention, and to investigate the state of affairs in this area, a survey was conducted with 470 teachers from Western Serbia to elicit their attitudes and opinions, and to investigate how these are related to personal motivation, capability for selfassessment, the school environment, and different aspects of individual professional development.
