Summary/Abstract: Radical changes in the organizational design and business strategy often result in identifying a number of employees as redundant. Such a practice has caused the disruption of the decades-old myth that, in exchange for adequate performance and commitment, one can expect a secure job and a predictable career. Instead, the employer - employee relationship is nowadays characterized by a much higher level of insecurity. This paper points out that job insecurity, which a growing number of employees are facing, has a complex structure, i.e. that it has both an objective and a subjective side, as well as the cognitive and affective dimensions. It is also pointed out that the consequences of a long-term and intense perception of job insecurity can be very negative at the individual as well as at the organizational level. In order to avoid or minimize those consequences, the paper emphasizes that it is necessary to be aware of the factors which affect the forming of such a perception, as well as of the strategies which could be used for overcoming this feeling.
