Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to present some new data and insights concerning folk songs about national heroes. In this particular case, the focus is on Lajos Kossuth, who is extremely popular in the Hungarian cultural tradition. By comparing him to his Polish equivalent, Tadeusz Kościuszko, the author tries to answer the crucial question: what should heroes like Kossuth and Kościuszko represent to be able to dominate a nation’s memory and imagination. The other question touches upon the genealogy and status of the texts of folk songs devoted to Kossuth: whether they were really created by the people or written by anonymous poets, authors of numerous political texts.
