Summary/Abstract: In numerous researches geographical proximity is considered as a sufficient factor for establishing regional homogeneity. This may be a justified simplification for macro scale analysis. However, researching mezzodata for NUTS 4 (powiat or county) or NUTS 5 (gminas, commune or community) shows that neighboring regions are often dissimilar due to historical, cultural, touristic, demographical or financial reasons, as well as the local governance and policies. To highlight the dispersion of socio-economic development in a region which is considered homogenous an analysis was carried out for communities in a single province (NUTS2 or voivodship). The Lodz province has been chosen as it has a “typical” level of development, i.e. similar toPoland’s average level. The aim of this paper is to analyse the level of socio-economic development of 177 communities in Lodz province. The research was carried out using the Hellwig’s taxonometric index based on the characteristics of local finance, entrepreneurship and labor market, demography and social activity. Subsequently, Geographic Information System (GIS)tools were uses to present and analyze the dispersion of development across Lodz province. The regional data for year 2013 come from the Local Data Bank of the Central Statistical Office
