North-Western Black Sea Coast in 18th c. Population. Historical Aspects

Summary/Abstract: The article considers some historical aspects in the evolution of population on the North-Western Black Sea Coast in 18th c. The research embraces southern area of the lands between the Prut and the Dniester Rivers (Budjak) and the Dniester and the Dnieper Rivers, which were partly under the Turkish power and partly under the Crimean Khan’s power. The latter was a privileged vassal of the Ottoman Empire. Such issues as territorial and administrative division of this area, political evolution and migration processes are studied in close relation with the historical events. The author tells about the number of population and its ethnic composition, both for settled and nomadic population of the territorial and administrative units of the region. Special attention is paid to changes of borderline between the possessions of the Budjak Nogays (vassals of the Crimean Khan) and the territories within the Prut-Dniester basin which were still under the power of the Moldavian Prince. Dependence of migration processes and changes in quantity and ethnic composition of the population on political situation and military conflicts of 18th c. is given special consideration. An important role in this context is played by Russian-Turkish wars of 1768-1774 and 1787-1792, due to which the Turks and the Tartars lost their control over the territory in the south of the Dniester-Dnieper interfluves and, besides, the territory under their direct control in the south of the Prut-Dniester interfluves shrank in size too.
