Summary/Abstract: It is a great honor for me to be invited to speak at this celebratory meeting in Szeged. There are not only friendly relations between my own university in Germany and your institution, with a number of students recently taking advantage of the Erasmus exchange. But I also speak here on behalf of the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore – the SIEF – which recognizes the longstanding involvement of Hungarian ethnologists and ethnographers in the building of our field of study, their valuable contributions to a wide variety of areas of research and their tireless efforts to participate in publishing research results not just in Hungarian but also in some of the currently used linguae francae, such as English or French. Hungary hosted the 7th SIEF Congress of 2001 and our colleagues in Budapest published an impressive volume of conference proceedings (PALÁDI-KOVÁCS 2004). Thus SIEF’s officers are very aware of the long lasting and strong support that has come to our international organization from this country.
