Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to present the photographic collection of Czech geographer Jiří Viktor Daneš (1880–1928), to describe the extent of damage to this archive during the floods of 2002 and to optimise the preservation methods of the photographic material. We analysed pictures from six geographic locations which Daneš had visited on his journey around the world in 1923 and prepared a working catalogue of positives, glass negatives and diapositives. Using the archive classification and the method of cultural transfer, we were able to explain the origin of the photographic collection and postulate how Daneš had presented his view of foreign cultures to Czech society both as a photographer and a geographer. In collaboration with co-authors we could clarify to what extent was the structure of the archival collection damaged or broken by floods. Present findings suggest the applicable way of classification and restoration of photographic archives. We attached some pictures and microscopic details of its damage.
