Investigation of Secondary School Student’s Attitude Towards Poems

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to examine the attitudes of the secondary school students towards poetry. Item pool was established by conducting literature search about the field and attitude scale in consideration of expert opinions. The prepared draft scale was presented to a expert group for evaluations. A draft scale consisting of 27 items was applied to a sample group of 180 students. As a result of applying item analysis and factor analysis to the obtained data, a 16item Poetry Attitude Scale was developed. The Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of Poetry Attitude Scale was found to be 0.87 for the whole scale. As a result of the factor analysis, it was determined that the scale had 4 subdimensions and the explained variance ratio was 56.8%. The resultant structure was tested by confirmatory factor analysis and good fit indexes was obtained (Chi-square / df = 1.442, TLI = 933, CFI =, 944; RMSEA =, 050). The findings show that the scale is reliable and valid. As a result of examining the attitudes of secondary school students towards poetry in term of their genders, female students' attitudes were found to be significantly higher than male students.
