Summary/Abstract: Archaeology developed later in the Ottoman State, where social, cultural and scientific developments were also introduced later. Along with the political and economic reasons for this delay, when it comes to the archeological awareness it should be seen as a problem of enlightenment. The archeological awareness, which surfaced with delay in the second half of the 19th century, made an important progress for the history of Turkish archaeology despite many hardships. In this period, the special efforts of individuals and the legal regulations titled "nizamname" issued for the protection of old works hold a great place in the development of archeological awareness of Ottoman State. Osman Hamdi Bey was one of the leaders of those who dealt with many issues such as setting a legal basis for excavations and struggling with smuggling. While working to uncover artifacts and bring them in to the science world, he has also embarked on an unprecedented striving to protect all kinds of sites from being destructed, where ancient artifacts found. One of the remarkable initiatives of Osman Hamdi Bey on this issue was his the struggle to prevent a future damage to the ancient city that could happen due to the placement of immigrants who were tried to be settled in Side.
