Summary/Abstract: This paper makes an attempt to analyze the mindset of creative Hungarian intellectuals who accepted various influential roles in Stalinist Hungary. It uses contemporary and other Hungarian and non-Hungarian patterns of intellectual behavior as a basis of comparison. The argument is shaped with the help of the conceptual framework of scapegoating.
