Concerning the Poetic Style of Mainstream Czech Hip Hop Lyrics

Summary/Abstract: This article is concerned with Czech hip-hop lyrics from the standpoint of literary studies. First of all, at the general level, it considers the question of the relationship between (sub)culture and text. It then provides a brief overview of the historical development of Czech hip-hop lyrics. This is followed by the main part of the article, an analysis of the lyrics of the song ‘Smíchov – Újezd’ by Vladimir 518 (Vladimír Brož, b. 1978), in which the author concentrates on characteristic topoi of Czech hip hop and on its narrative, linguistic, andother poetic approaches.
