The Transformation of Life Style of Conservative People in Turkey

Summary/Abstract: In contemporary Turkey, the transformations in conservative individuals’ life styles are observed. Many changes from dressing style to spending leisure time have appeared. In this paper which tries to understand these transformations, first of all, the concept of habitus, which is one of the important means to understand life styles, is examined. Second, the features of consumer society and the transformation of Turkey to consumer society are examined because we consider that they are the main reasons for this transformations. Thirdly, two social facts which show the transformation of conservative people’s life styles are elaborated: (i) the transformation of tesettur and Ala magazine and (ii) touristic gaze which appears while spending leisure time. Finally, these transformations have been tried to be understood from the perspectives of the aestheticization of and commodification of life styles.
