Summary/Abstract: It is generally thought that V. Nabokov’s novel Laughter in the dark is an English-language version of Camera obscura, a translation. The study aims to show that these are two different novels (though of the same plot), since their image systems present themselves as two different metaphors. In Camera obscura the metaphor is «life as a work of art», while in Laughter in the dark it is “a pictura come alive”.
