Summary/Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate methodological questions, which bear major importance in archeological observations, analysis and publication of the finds. Failing to apply the correct methods the archaeologist risks committing grave errors. The critical evaluation of sources is of great importance, when using the literature or data from earlier excavations. The same applies to the use of results from other disciplines (art history and history of architecture): the researcher needs expertise in the methodology of these as well, in order to be able to judge the merit of their statements or hypotheses. Similarly, critical evaluation of sources is needed when using information in paintings or drawings: these cannot be interpreted generally, being influenced by the fashions of the region or the part of the society they are connected to.
