Source / Target Oriented Tendencies in The Translations of Lord of the Flies

Summary/Abstract: When communication, oral or written, takes place between different languages or different cultures, then the medium of communication cannot be the language alone but the translation as well, as the bridge between two languages. A literary work leads the author to the readers in its original culture and the translation of this literary work takes the author away to the readers of that language and culture. Here, these questions draw the attention: Should a translated literary work be exactly the equivalent of its original? Or else should it be recreated in its target language and culture? This simple discrepancy revealed associates with the discussions about source oriented or target oriented approaches to translation. In this study, two translations of Golding’s Lord of the Flies are analysed through Toury’s translational norms. The results show that Mina Urgan adopts target oriented approach whereas Müge Tayşi mostly employs source oriented approach to her translation.
