Situational factors of development of the Belarusian language spelling norms in 1930-1932

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the situational factors of the orthography reform of the Belarusian language in the early 1930s. The catastrophe of the Belarusian linguistics of 1930 is described, which was related to the arrest of many outstanding linguists and the adoption of the resolution issued by the bureau of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Communist Party of Bolsheviks, “Results of the Discussion on Linguistics”. The ideological atmosphere of the early 1930s is analyzed, as well as the circumstances under which the linguists of that time worked. The arguments that the authorities of that time considered the orthography reform of the Belarusian language to be a constituent part of the ideological struggle are presented. The author arrives at the conclusion that an orthography project was prepared by the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus in 1932; however, it was not published owing to the unfavourable ideological and political situation.
