A New Example of Wrong Derivation: Şekilgeç

Summary/Abstract: All changes and developments in a society and life also affect the language of the given society. As much as these changes and developments are considered, “oblivion of some words, phonetic changes, semantic changes, exposure to other languages, new lexicalization processes” and such various cases can be observed. In Turkish language, lexicalization consists of many ways such as “addition, merging, abbreviation, clipping, type changing, borrowing”. There is a general system of lexicalization by adding: Suffixes to be added to nouns cannot be added to verbs; those to be added to verbs cannot be added to nouns. Most of the words in today’s Turkish language are in line with this system and the new lexicalization is expected to comply with this system by the nature of language. However, there are also some words which have become permanent in the language although they have been lexicalized out of the abovementioned derivation system. The word “şekilgeç” derived by the addition of suffix ‘-gAç -to be added to verbs- to a noun is a new word derived out of this derivation system of Turkish language. This study touches upon the derivation and use of the word “şekilgeç” and also suggests new words to replace this word.
