Summary/Abstract: The case study of AVIUM agricultural and AVIUM 2000 food processing co-operatives prepared within the Regoverning Markets programme, we aimed to identify certain conditions and possibilities for the Hungarian SME farmers to join the modern food supply system drastically and continuously changing in the last 15 years. The basic elements of uniqueness and sustainability of the two co-operatives are: optimal size, horizontal and vertical co-ordination and the personality of the chairman. In case of the processing co-operative — which seems to be the more successful at the moment — we can also mention the marketing strategy using diversification in the number as well as in the type of the partners, avoiding the multinationals and exploiting the market niches; the integration of wholesale services and the maximal utilisation of development tenders and subsidies.
