Summary/Abstract: Shared services centers are centralized units performing supporting services for entire or part of an enterprise (or holding). Usually these are back office services (administrative, IT, accounting and finance, logistics, HR, etc.). Due to centralization, specialization and scale effect SSC enable the benefits: reduction of costs, increase of quality level, technology development. The main aspects of location are connected with low-cost priority (employee costs, real estate costs, taxes) and good infrastructure (telecommunication, transport). In case of Polish cities who attract many SSC success factors are pointed: well educated work-force, low costs, airports, recognition abroad and local authorities activity in gaining the investors. Regions can benefit from SSC in many ways: they create new jobs, develop infrastructure, pay taxes, can attract new investors. However if the entrance and exit barriers are low and shared services centers do not perform sophisticated tasks, they can easily and quickly change their location to cheaper regions. This should be kept in mind by local authorities when negotiating special incentives for such investors.
