Fibula from Malaya Ribitza

Summary/Abstract: The fibula (fig. 1.1) found by the superficial examination of the settlement Malaia Rybitza 3 (Krasnopolie district, Sumy region, the Psjol river basin) is published. It is pertained to the range of the «post east German», «Dnieper» group, of IIC series (according to J.Werner). Its immediate analogs are combined in «Mena» type (fig. 3). The main area of the type embraces the south of Kolochin culture, an other specimen was found on the territory of Prague culture. All the findings were made not far from the contact areas of the mentioned cultures with Pen’kovka culture (fig. 2). The Danube and Crimean analogs date the examined fibula serias from the 7th century A.D. The «Mena» type doesn’t belong to the most early ones within the limits of this series. The combination of the main elements which define the examined group of fibulae were met in east German cultures of the Danube, but there are no enough grounds to consider these findings as belonged to Germans. The greatest variety and the main concentration of the wares of the examined group fall on the Middle Dnieper region and the Severskij Donetz riverhead. The loss of the obvious prototypes on the other territories, instability of feature combinations but their stable set, originality of the ware appearance allow to assume here the process of forming of a new cultural plate and fibula production center. However the cultural context of the number of findings and their style doesn’t allow to combine their origin with Pen’kovka culture. The historico-social, ethnic, and cultural characteristics of the creators of the «Dnieper» finger fibula are not clear yet.
