Summary/Abstract: In the aftermath of World War II, colonial Algeria enjoyed a pluralist political system. Both the Muslim and the European-born population could choose among a large variety of parties. The European parties followed the French political system’s organizational and ideological pattern, even though they generally took a more radical stance in colonial issues. In early 1951 Jacques Chevallier, one of the Pied-Noirs politicians, sparked angry debate and criticism on his proposal to legitimate the French presence in Algeria through a constant dialogue with the Muslim community, as well as political and social reforms. Supporters and opponents of his proposal carried on fierce struggle during the electoral campaigns. Due to the escalation of the crisis of the old colonial system in Indochina and other protectorates, ideological diff erences within the European- born population of Algeria tended to disappear, leaving room for the creation of a homogeneous political community.
