Summary/Abstract: This essay performs a cursory analysis of the question whether social work possesses a political character, and examines how far it is a political actor possessing chances to influence political decision-making processes. It starts by reviewing the major points in the controversial debate over the political mandate. After this, it sketches the theoretical model of deliberative democracy from Jürgen Habermas and goes on to ask whether this model may provide a chance or chances for social work to legitimize its role as a political actor.
