Summary/Abstract: The paper investigates the characteristics of the transitional period in Romania, and the ongoing social, political, economic, and cultural processes following the 1989 regime change. The fall of the old regime triggered new challenges in all fields of life in Romania: the forces of power possession and division, that is, the actors of the political stage, have changed, as also the social situation, place, and role of various social groups. Who were the winners and the losers of this slow transition? In addition to answering these questions, the author also tries to outline the general situation of the press in the age, the particularities of the “intermittently free” media, while also endeavoring to draw pertinent conclusions for the present.
