Summary/Abstract: Scholarship on gendered news in campaign coverage of women running for office points to what Jamieson (1995) refers to as the double bind for women in leadership. This study analyzed 67 news reports from three major newspapers published shortly after John McCain announced Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate for the 2008 election. Findings indicate news coverage of Palin did place her in a double bind by focusing predominantly on her family and questioning her competence for political office. We argue that this focus creates barriers for women who run for political office.
