Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt at a synthetic review and interpretation of the angelic motives present in Zbigniew Herbert’s poetry. The angelic creations of the author of “Mr Cogito” are presented in a broader cultural perspective. First of all, the context of the literary tradition was referred to especially of the Romantic and contemporary literature. An important reference point is also art, philosophy and theology. The presentations of angels are very strongly embedded in the basic aesthetic and moral paradigms exposed by the poet. The author of “Rovigo” has attained in his works a peculiar reinterpretation of the ways of handling of angelic images ad their functions by placing the subtle creatures in a resolute manner in the dehumanized realm, marked with the tragic note. The author of the article attempted to show how the angelic motives determine Herbert’s poetic imagination.
