Summary/Abstract: Eszter Biró wrote about the 2017 edition of the bi-annually organized Spielart Festival, pointing out the political engagement of the Munich theatrical event. South-African and South-Asian progressive theatre were in the focus of the latest edition of the festival, with the recurring theme of the chorus, the various possibilities of correlations between the individual and the community and the primordial experience of meeting otherness and strangers. Biró highlights Silvia Calderoni’s MDLSX performance, which speaks about intersexuality through a personal story; Oliver Zahn’s essay-show Experiment About Gymnastics (Versuch Über das Turnen), discussing the political application of gymnastics through the history of gymnastics; Marta Górnicka’s theatrical chorus performance Hymn to Love, investigating the theme of national identity; Berlin-based Lebanese creator, Rima Najdi’s performance Think Much. Cry Much, as well as Milo Rau’s performance with actors with Down-syndrome 120 Days of Sodoma (Die 120 Tage von Sodom).
