Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to present a brief overview of the main historical and theoretical developments undergone by the issue of supreme leadership (‘Imāmah) in the Sunni tradition. The entire Muslim political philosophy is developed around this theme of establishing the criteria of legitimacy and the nature of authority which is called to lead the Islamic community after the disappearance of the Prophet.
