Summary/Abstract: Modern Western Christian theology is experiencing a serious crisis of identity, related to its place in academic life. Theology should at the same time fulfill criteria of scientificity and be an authentic Christian witness. In this area Orthodox Christian thought can be very helpful for Western theologians. The article presents the specific Orthodox understanding of theology. Theology is not only a science. It is rather wisdom and a mystical union with God. An authentic Christian theology should be based on the real experience of a human being’s encounter with God. This experience is not subjective. It is possible only within the community of the Church. Christian mysticism, liturgy and prayer are specific manifestations of such an experience. Therefore a Christian theologian, if he or she wants to retain his/her own identity, should be a witness of Christ not only through his/her theological work, but also through his/her personal faith and participation in the life of the Church.
