Summary/Abstract: The objective of the recent analysis is to discover the spatial characteristics of the Hungarian Roma population and its changes during the last almost three decades. The investigation has been based on the population census datasets of 1990 and 2011 that relies on self-declaration, and other two surveys (the CIKOBI survey from 1984-87 and the survey of the University of Debrecen from 2010-13), the latter representing external ethnic assessment. In the latest census 316.000 persons declared themselves as Roma and according to the recent survey approximately 876.000 Roma people lived in Hungary in 2010-2013. The significant growth in the Roma population is obviously demonstrated and its regional disparities are also discovered. Our research results have rein-forced the already known regional characteristics of the Roma population. In the reviewed period weakening spatial backwardness is typical, the share of Roma population living in towns is increasing, approaching the proportion within the national value. However, the rapid growth of the Roma population is especially visible in the case of those districts, where their proportion was already high in the1980s (that has doubled since then). This pro-cess is quite concentrated affecting mostly districts in the underdeveloped areas of the country.
