Summary/Abstract: The Hungarian writers had never made it easy for their rulers: while the literature of other countries crept into the ivory tower, Hungarian was always associated with the social struggles of their country. Even Rákosi-Stalinism did not succeed in silencing this critique: the discussions of the highly literary Petöfi circle were one of the many triggering moments of the 1956 October events. Twenty-five years later, the young literati raise their voices. At a conference in the idyllic tourist resort Szentendre - north of Budapest - they demanded their right to their own independent organization. The experiences of a man of letters who has chosen the pseudonym Péter Zöld give an interesting insight into the method of the Hungarian cultural and political bureaucracy.
